I am committed to building diversity, equity, and inclusion into my research program and teaching efforts at USU, and along with my research group strive to create a welcoming and safe environment in the field, lab, and classroom. We actively support the USU Department of Geosciences Commitment to Inclusivity, Diversity, and Anti-Racism. Also, the Stable Isotope and Geochemistry Labs serve as important venues within the Department of Geosciences to host outreach activities for students of all ages. Below are a few examples of recent outreach efforts by my group.
USU Native American Student Mentoring Program (NASMP) - Annually, this program brings Native American students that attend the USU Blanding campus to the USU main campus in Logan for mentored STEM research experiences. The goal of the program is to increase retention and representation of these students in STEM fields, and encourage these students to complete their bachelors degree at USU main campus. My research group and lab has hosted students, providing hands-on research experiences that combine some local field sampling with subsequent lab analyses. Pictured here are two USU Blanding students collecting hot spring samples on lands owned by the Northwestern Shoshone people in southern Idaho, and learning how to geochemically analyze their samples from our lab manager Andrew Lonero.

A component of our NSF-supported research in Peru are outreach activities in the form of collaboration and training with faculty and students at the Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco. Pictured here are myself, Coleman Hiett (USU PhD student), and Natalie Tanski (USU PhD student) with Professor Cardenas and students that participated in a short research update and workshop on stable isotope geochemistry.
